One comes to The Croning, then, with great expectations, anticipating horror of the highest order, and indeed, this is delightful dark fantasy, as delicate as it is inevitably devastating. I stumbled across Barron on one of my forums reading up about the 'cosmic horror' genre. Another novel that came highly recommended, and I will pass on that recommendation like a piece of parchment festooned with occult runes to the next innocent idler, is THE CRONING by Laird Barron. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary called a crone an ugly, withered (and usually wicked) old woman. Thus, in the opening phrases of The Croning , Barron begins this juxtaposition of the down to earth with what we might describe as out of this world. You see, I'm woefully under read on the Lovecraft mythos. It started out with feeling like I just don't have one more thing to give. So, here we are at book #22 for 2012; Laird Barron's “The Croning”!
